This ecoregion includes the Huang He (Yellow River) basin upriver from the point it exits the Himalayas until about Guide in Qinghai Province, and the endorheic basins of Gansu.

Justification for delineation

Delineations were determined using a bottom-up approach that employed both published and unpublished field data and expert assessment (Abell et al. 2008; Li 1981; Wu & Wu 1992; Zhang 1995). This ecoregion is delineated based on drainage (geomorphology), topography, and differences in the fauna (M. Kottelat pers. comm. 2006).
